Suitable For

People who like to develop websites.

Skills Required

Knowledge of WordPress platform and website creation.

Time Required For Creating A Website

Depends on the expertise of the developer in website creation.

Tips

1. Choose a topic you are passionate about. You need to be passionate about the subject your website focuses on. If you launch a website about something that you don’t care about, you will lose interest very quickly and inevitably stop working on it.

2. Think about your long-term business model. To make your website successful you should do a lot of research beforehand. Try to find answers to the following questions:

Who are your direct competitors?

How do your competitors make money?

How will your website make money?

How can you make your website stand out from others?

How long will it take to monetize your website?

3. Choose a domain name that is relevant to your topic and appeals to your target audience.

A good domain name is an essential part of branding your blog. Choose a.COM as your domain extension because it looks more professional.

4. Choose a reliable paid host like Hostgator, Bluehost, or anyone that might suit your needs.

5. You need to make your website’s design and layout look very professional. Believe it or not but first-time visitors will make a judgment about your blog within the first 10 seconds of loading, so you need to make sure that your website’s design appeals to them and they like it.

How To Monetize

1. Sign up and register your website on Flippa.com. Flippa com works on a bidding model, the highest bidder gets the ownership of the website.

2. Set the bid price of your website 10 times greater than the current monthly income of your site. For example, if your site is earning $500 per month then you can set the basic selling bid price of your site to at least $5000.

3. Start the auction and wait for bids. People will start bidding for purchasing your site. Once you receive the bid that satisfies your target selling price, then finalize the deal with the bidder.

4. Flippa will manage all the payment and other technical stuff for you and you’ll receive your commissions via your selected payment method.

Flippa is good but charge high listing fees. You can probably make good money though if you know what you’re doing and buy aged domains with traffic. You’d still need to spend at least six months to improve the site and add content before selling. In some cases depending on the niche, it may be better to keep the site and earn money from ad revenue or affiliate programs.

    Hi Aps,
I was pleased to find your article because I had heard about Flippa but good to see the case studies of how you are actually developing websites and then selling them.
Can I ask a question? Is Flippa the best marketplace for selling unused domain names? I have a .com domain with web content on it that I no longer need. Is it best to sell that .com domain on Flippa or is there another platform that you can recommend to sell the domain?
    Thanks in advance, John

    Hi Aparna

I love Flippa! I am totally intrigued by how much you can sell a website for that isn’t making much money.

I’ve been following Mat Digitty recently who buys cheap websites then does his SEO magic on them and re-sells them for a ton of money!

The secret, as you say, is to know what you are doing so that you can increase the traffic and income and can sell it for more.

Can you learn and start a website from scratch yourself? As you have said, yes you can! And if you are just starting out, this is really the only way.

Once you know what you are doing, buying a site with some traffic and revenue can save you 6 – 12 months as, of course, new sites take some time to rank.

The other thing Flippa is good for is deciding on your niche. Check what niche websites are in that are selling for the most money with the least traffic and revenue for some great ideas.

    Best,

    Jean

Well… I learned something new from reading this website. I have never heard of Flippa before.

But now I have bookmarked it, for future reference.

I like the explanation of it, and one question springs to mind, which is this

Does it matter how much traffic your website has, or how old the domain is? as that is not totally clear from reading the post

Another question that comes to mind is this… Reading that you have to have in-depth knowledge of WordPress, why would you need that? I know it says about buying websites, but can you clarify why you need an in-depth knowledge.

The monetisation part seems intriguing, its a bit like eBay in someway, so I guess you would potentially need some capital if you were looking to buy a site.

What is the commission % you receive as its not stated.

It had crossed my mind that I might want to sell my website, so it is useful to know that I can ask ten times the amount that my website brings in on a monthly basis. If somebody wanted to buy my website, would they have a way of establishing whether my site is selling at a reasonable price or if the price has been inflated?

The same would apply if I wanted to buy a website. How or where can I check if the website is actually making money?

You mention that Flippa would handle the sale, which seems effortlessly, but do they keep a percentage of the purchase price for themselves?

Flippa has an assessment tool to establish how much your site should be worth. But they can’t tell u how much u should sell for, obviously.
And yes, they keep a % for themselves. It’s about 15%.

There are ideas on my website for side hustles that will, at most, earn you and me a few hundred or thousand dollars every month.
I wonder, though, if you are interested in the REAL thing! The actual big-bucks! Affiliate Marketing with Wealthy Affiliate! Do check it out.
      Love
